Malawi is in an acute phase of a long-term emergency due to a deadly combination of HIV/AIDS, food shortages, and a drastically weakened workforce in this agricultural society. As parents fall ill and die, the children are the ones left behind. Their suffering is immeasurable. There are approximately 1 million orphaned children in Malawi alone. Some, as young as 10 years old, are left to feed their households, leaving them at high risk of dropping out of school and becoming involved in sex work to survive. Family members or compassionate families take on other children. Many grandparents receive their grandchildren, but their age prevents them from farming. Where once their children would be providing for them in their later years, now they are left with young grandchildren. The result is many in that household now face severe food shortages.

For less than $1 a day ($25.00 a month), you can become directly involved helping provide an orphaned child or an aged person with a safe facility, nutritious food, clean water, a school uniform, education on farming methods, education on HIV/AIDS prevention.
